Geographically located in the heart of New South Wales, Dubbo is undoubtedly the shopping capital of the West. Dubbo is a service city with a shopping population in excess of 120,000 people. It services a third of the geographic area of New South Wales.
Dubbo is the only city located in the Orana Region having developed over time as a major service centre and is situated at the meeting point of the Newell, Mitchell and Golden Highways. The City is an easy five-hour drive to Sydney, four hours from Newcastle and Canberra and a 10-hour drive from Melbourne and Brisbane.
The people
The profile of Dubbo’s population is typical of a large, growing regional centre and the City’s economic prominence in the region is reflected in its ongoing population growth. Less than 5% of the City’s population was born outside Australia, while 9% identify as Aboriginal.
High growth rates achieved in the City during the 1970s and 1980s made planning essential to keep pace with the demand for infrastructure development as the City grew from a population of 20,629 in 1971 to 30,918 in 1986 to nearly 40,000 today.
The City
